Tourism Information
Ngqushwa and Hamburg Town
Ngqushwa Local municipality is an amalgamation of two towns, namely Hamburg and Peddie. The towns have natural beauty and are a character of this municipal area, especially the coastal region with its important tourist assets that continually attract tourists and locals alike.

The municipality prides itself as one of the areas within the Amathole District that has a rich history and heritage of tales from frontier wars taking place between settlers and tribes in the region. These historical sites have been declared as sites were one traveling the area can go and view as they attract people from all walks of life.

Peddie Town
As with many Eastern Cape towns, the town of Peddie was initially the site of a British Fort; one in a long line of proliferations built by the British to defend the Cape Colony against Xhosa Warriors trying to reclaim their ancestral lands.

Peddie started its existence as an Earth-stockade Fort shaped like an eight pointed star which was built in 1835 to protect the AmaMfengu tribe who took refuge from troubles in the Transkei. The town was named after Colonel John Peddie of the 72nd Highlanders.  Fort Peddie became magistracy in 1848 and a few relics of the troubled frontier wars still remain in the town.

The town is situated in the N2 between two colonial centers of that time, Grahamstown and King Williams Town. Although it is small, it consists of an immensely proud community, especially after it was chosen as the town to which the TV series “Tsha Tsha” was shot. The community of Ngqushwa was excited with “Tsha Tsha” as they had been given a chance to test their acting skills and given a chance to showcase their talent in the fictional town called Lubusi.

Local Tourism Organization

The municipality has an existing local tourism organization that was launched on 13 October 2004. Ngqushwa identified a need to establish a structure that will co-ordinate tourism activities within the municipality like the development, promotion and marketing of tourism features that the area has locally. The Amathole District Municipality funds the project on an annual basis. Activities that are done by the LTO are for the effort to promote local economies and creation of jobs through revenue generated from rendering services to tourists traveling the area.

The municipality had the following objectives while establishing the project.

  • To align planning with the IDP
  • To be able to manage information
  • To encourage private and public partnership
  • To be able to maximize community participation
  • To share resources with the Municipality
