Fort Peddie:The originator of the town name

The Amathole Heritage Initiative Project was initiated by the Amathole District Municipality, to develop four heritage Tourism Routes with visitor facilities, information displays and route centres, heritage sites, access improvements, signage and anchor project enterprises, form partnership/enterprises etc. The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has donated R20 000 000 to run the project. The municipal area has benefited from the project, due to a number of eye catching tourism sites heritage sites.

The objectives of the project were the following:

  • Identify sites in conjunction with stakeholders
  • Identify needs for upgrading and cost
  • Identify labour, select and train
  • Rehabilitation of sites
  • Enterprise/ joint ventures
